We Need Your Holiday Help!

December 7th, 2013

IOTS Blog POst Dec 7 vancouver bc professional organizer

December is here! Once we flip the calendar to the 12th and final month of the year, all talk turns to the impending holiday season.

Just a few days ago I was speaking to a client about the trials (and triumphs) of gift-giving at Christmas. I suggested one of my favourite holiday tips – giving the gift of an event. To my surprise, my client told me how gift certificates cause him only stress because he doesn’t have time to use them and thus they go to waste.

I desperately tried to hide the dismay on my face. Gift cards, while not something I personally give out often, have always been one of my suggested gift ideas. This stems from my own fear of receiving things that don’t fit my motto of “must love it or it must support me.” A gift card, wallet-sized and with no expiry date, always seemed a lot better than most of the clutter that comes into homes during the holidays.

As my brilliant plan was shattered on the spot, (no tears were shed thankfully), I realized that I needed help. What gifts should I recommend that are tried, tested and true plusdoesn’t create holiday clutter during this special season? Here’s where you, my amazing reader, come in. What gift-giving ideas can you share that keep the clutter bugs away and still bring joy to loved one’s faces? I can’t wait to hear your amazing input. (Please leave your favourites in the Comments below – I will share the most inspiring ideas on the In Order To Succeed Facebook page.)

All I want for Christmas is for you to savour the season with as little stress and clutter as possible. My favourite gift to give (Christmas or birthday) is brunch at the person’s favourite restaurant. It gives us a great opportunity to catch up, have some delicious food and is definitely not clutter. 🙂

I try to find an upcoming music show or event that I know they are interested in and get tickets to that. Also for older relatives who have everything and are charity minded I’ve sponsored owls at the local sanctuary: http://www.owlcanada.org They send out a small low clutter card, you get to pick your owl.

The gift of giving to a charity/non-profit has become more popular. If you’re an animal lover like me, having a friend donate the amount they would have spent on a material gift to a non-profit like the SPCA means a lot. And if it’s the thought that counts, how much more thoughtful can you get? 😉

I love the gift of experience, so try and give tickets to an event, gallery or museum. Double this up with a homemade voucher for a lunch trip and voila.
