As a professional organizer, I am in a specialized field with like-minded passionate people. We use a very specific set of skills and ideas that can transform any given space. The traits we possess led us down a particular road to our profession, but everyone has a little love in their heart for a fine organized space.

I’m willing to bet that on your staff you have at least one natural born organizer. They may not find organizing to be such a passion that they make it a career, but they were born to put things in order and be diligent in following up with a system. These people are your storage closet’s best friend.

Find them (you probably already know who they are), and empower them with the decision-making ability to tackle, implement and maintain your storage spaces.  Look at their desks. Trust me – they’ve been wanting to do this for years.

Chances are they just didn’t have enough time, or were worried that a self-made system they invented would not be maintained by their peers or superiors. If you create this opportunity for them I promise you’ll save time and money immediately.

Sit down together first to set up some clear guidelines so they feel confident moving forward and making decisions. A good rule of thumb is if it’s covered in dust, hasn’t been used in 2 + years or cost less than $100,  they can say goodbye to it.

This added responsibility will empower them, encourage them to have pride in their workspace, and is an excellent leadership opportunity. If their workload is heavy, they could train an office assistant to maintain the space and simply be involved in follow-up with this person each month. The prospect of having multiple employees invested in maintaining a beautifully organized office supply closet makes my heart swell!
