Make organizing a routine

Make organizing a routine

Last year I vowed to spend time each week meditating. I failed. Well, just like my workout goals I’m getting back on the wagon and am going to take some of my own advice.

Even the most organized organizers find their space gets out of control without consistent maintenance (wouldn’t be nice if our homes maintained themselves.)

Our clients often discover that working with us inspires them to maintain their space however what happens when we don’t see them for months and the self motivation has dimmed its focus?  That’s why creating an organizing routine is so important.  I mean, we never forget to put on clothes in the morning or brush our teeth at night.  So why not incorporate 5 minutes of organizing into a routine that is already part of your daily structure?  For example, once you bring the mail in from the front door take a minute to open it and recycle/shred what’s not needed before placing the remaining paper with your other to do items.

Are we setting ourselves up for failure?

February 1st, 2012

Setting ourselves up for failure

My last blog gently addressed the importance of identifying your priorities to set you up for success, whether it’s leaving the house on time or being productive at work.  It’s a rare occasion when we take the time to ask ourselves, “what are my priorities?” (renewing my auto insurance, getting the lunches made, cleaning the bathroom, walking the dog, returning the movies, working on my website). No, what I’m referring to are your life priorities. Many of us have the same priorities in the same order.  Let me guess yours ~ family, health, friends, work… Why, if this order of life priorities looks so familiar, are we filling our time and thoughts with a million and one things on our to do lists?  If you measure out your true life priorities do they match how you’re spending your time and effort?  Ya ya you have to get ______, ______, and ______ completed or else… Is this true or have we all fallen into a trap of setting ourselves up for failure.  Are the things on your to do list really a priority?  Did you prioritize spending time with your family and friends, going to the gym and preparing healthy meals?

What are we choosing to fill our lives with?

January 25th, 2012

What are we choosing to fill our lives with

Many of us strive for material possessions which often prevent us from pursuits that would truly make us happy.  I may be speaking about myself or perhaps it is part of a societal syndrome to be everything to everyone.  To be perfect to everyone, to get it all done, to have everything under control, have it all, may it be belongings or sensibilities or talents or… How tiring and absolutely draining.  We collect objects to fill some void or to create an acceptable appearance.  It’s more than just items that we fill our lives with its endless tasks on our to-do lists, acquaintances and even constant analysis.

If we simply take a few minutes to reflect on what is really important to us, and how we feel deep down about the choices we are making, perhaps then we could focus on what is really important.

Are you rushing out the door with cereal in your hand too?

January 18th, 2012

Running out the door with cereal

I must admit…please don’t tell…that I’m sometimes late getting out of the house in the morning.  I throw my toothbrush and toothpaste in my purse and rush out the door with breakfast in hand. I eat my oatmeal at the stoplights wondering if I could ever be pulled over for breaking some eating in the car law!  Oddly, my morning had really started off quite relaxed.  I was able to make my bed, put the dishes away and tidy up my clothes that were on the floor from the day before.  Yet, at the last minute I’m printing off invoices and rushing to get the important things finished.  Typical.  I bet you know someone who’s a lot like this ;)   It occurred to me that if I just get the ‘must do’ things done first then any extra time can be filled with the extra things.  So, getting my clothes on and getting my bag and lunch packed should be the first things to get done (I know what you’re thinking – she should have packed her bag the night before like her last blog implied) leaving the less important things until the end, or in the evening.  This simple idea can really reduce stress.

What to do with gifts that don’t ring true?

December 28th, 2011

What to do with gifts that don't ring true

The holiday has passed and Aunt Mildred gave you another one of those “things” ~ again!

One of the most common reasons heard from clients as to why they cannot part with an unwanted gift is, “Oh, ______ gave it to me and I couldn’t possibly give it away, they’ll notice.”  We’re inclined to say that they probably won’t notice that it’s missing from the box where you’ve hidden it in your basement.  However they may notice if they never see you use it shortly after they’ve gifted it to you.

Here is one possible solution.  Allocate a box for these unloved items.  Make sure the gift is visible during the next couple visits from that gifter.  Once they see the gift in action it will satisfy their curiosity and then you can simply transfer it to the other box allocated “Donate.”  You are now providing an opportunity for this unwanted gift to be loved by someone else!
